How to Stay Motivated

My tips for staying motivated with your health and fitness.
I can’t even count the number of times I have started a change in diet or a workout program, just to fall off the wagon a couple of weeks later. It’s so exciting at first, right? You have this shiny new plan. You are determined. THIS time you are going to finally make it work. And then a week goes by and the newness wears off. Life gets busy. You miss a workout here. You lose control of a food choice there. Suddenly weeks have gone by since your last workout. All of the progress you made with your nutrition is gone. You think ‘What’s the point? I’ve already screwed up. I’m back at square one.’ You’ve lost all motivation.

Does this sound familiar? Have you been there too? It can be tough to stay motivated. I understand. I have been there too! There are still days when I struggle to make myself do my workout or make the right food choice. I just wanted to share a few tips that have helped me stay on track. Hopefully they will help you also!

Tips to Staying Motivated

Set small goals & reward yourself.

You may have an ultimate goal of where you want to be, but make small goals for yourself.  These small goals help you realize the progress you are making even in baby steps. Each time you reach one, reward yourself. The reward should NOT be food. Maybe it is a new workout outfit, a new gadget you have been wanting, or something else you have your eye on. Give yourself incentive to keep pushing.

Have fun.

Find something you like to do. If you are dragging yourself to the gym every day to use the elliptical and you hate it, you aren’t doing yourself any favors! Even if you have to talk yourself into your workout every day, it should be something that you enjoy once you get started. You will never stick with something you don’t like!

Find an accountability partner.

When you feel accountable to someone, you are much more likely to stay dedicated. For me, challenge groups were the thing that made all of the difference. Before I started the groups and coaching, I would start and quit in a never ending cycle. Being accountable to the others in the group and knowing that I wasn’t alone was what I needed to keep going.

Find your ‘Why’.

In my opinion, this is the MOST important of all of my tips. Maybe you want to lose weight so that you look good for an upcoming event. That’s great! That may work for the short term, but you true why is that reason that pulls you out of bed on a cold morning when you would rather sleep in. Your why is what pushes you to push past the tired and do it anyway. Your why will be what drives you to make healthier food choices. Look deep down. Figure out what that is for you. I have several whys that drive me. I never want to have back surgery again. While some of that is out of my control, I know that what I CAN do is strengthen myself as much as possible. So every morning I get up and I press play and I push myself. Even when it hurts, because my why is driving me to keep going. When I look at my children, I am filled with so much love. I want to be healthy and be able to run around and play with them every single day. That is my why. These are the types of things that will drive you to keep going. Keep pushing. Never give up.

I hope that you find these tips helpful. Keep pushing. You CAN do this!! Don’t give up! If I can do this, anyone can! :)

Happy Friday!!
